Abstract
Onomastic study of the characters in Atakpo's Return to the sun-god: a morphopragmatic perspective gives an insight into the linguistic operations of the naming system of the characters in the play. It aims to analyse the characters in the play using Morpho-pragmatic analysis through the process of word formation. The study is a qualitative – descriptive design which describes the morpho-pragmatic structure of the characters in the play – The data were drawn from the major characters in the play using the purposive sample method. The study reveals a common phenomenon in African society where there is always a conflict between tradition and modernity. This new phenomenon becomes the new normal. New ways of life and doctrines are introduced to such secluded and unadulterated communities. The morpho-pragmatic theory makes grammar reproducible and performs grammatical operations using the language of the text to create meaning in different situations.
